Rooms That Men Love

The needs and wants of men are few and uncomplicated…the company of a few good friends and a warm atmosphere in which to enjoy them. The friends may be their buddies, good books, a cigar and a comfy chair, a faithful dog…all these things are clichés but clichés get to be so because they are so very true!

If it’s one thing I have learned in going into thousands of homes, it is this, men believe that wood is sacred. It is not to be primed or painted, not to be removed or altered. In fact, in the opinion of men it often is necessary to add more of it into a space! Laugh if you will but believe this, men love the warmth and sensory wealth that wood brings to a room. Men posess a highly developed tactile sense, his sense of touch is of primary importance …the more natural texture you can bring into a space, the better it is. The sexes are wired differently, you know, it's that Mars and Venus thing. Vive la difference!

• Nubby/tweedy fabrics…do consider corduroy draperies hung from a mahogany decorative rod
• An oversized wing chair upholstered in a herringbone tweed or rich paisley
• A tribal or traditional area rug
• Wallpaper (yes! Wallpaper)
