Rugs, Area Rugs, and CarpetingIn decorating the general rule of thumb is to base your décor around the item least likely to change…for most, that is the rug Your rugs are literally and figuratively the foundations for all your furnishings. A rug, area rug, or carpetin anchors a room like no other item can and often is the common thread which binds various furnishings, patterns, and colors. (sry for bad puns <<blush>>) How to zip up a room with simplicity? Start with a rug you love. Don’t worry about what that might be, just let your heart speak loudly, you will recognize its voice when you hear it! Once you have the rug chosen, its style and mood will automatically set the tone for your room. It will guide you towards fabrics and furnishings which are complimentary and it will be very easy to discard ones which are not. You will breeze fearlessly through the hundreds of fabric and color choices because your rug is a compass. OK, now that I’ve said all this about a rug choice, just what are the options out there? One look which I really love is the pairing of neutrals with bits of bold color. I work with a rug vendor who has created an entire line of rugs that use areas of natural wool mingled with bright colors.
The result is a rug which is greener to produce because there is less dye used…and the neutral, natural wool is the perfect foil for the more lively color. Imagine your entire room furnished in neutrals…the occasional pop of color from a well placed pillow accent and the fabulous colorful rug underfoot. It’s so easy to create a stunning room when you follow this recipe. Another rug weaver allows you to choose any pattern that the company makes and to choose any colors for that pattern from a wide palette of New Zealand wools….a truly custom rug for the discerning homeowner.
I created this rug to evoke the images of drifting beach sands for a seashore feeling. Just promise me this, don’t go for the safe choice because nothing that is safe is going to make an impact. If you want to put a little “zip” in your spaces you are going to have to move beyond safe as your foundation… I guarantee that a rug you love vs.a rug that is generic is in the end going to provide you with more satisfaction and pleasure than the “sensible” choice. Take the leap, I’ll hold your hand. :-) |
