Window Treatment Styles

If you are a decorating “nut” like I am, you notice details everywhere you go…restaurants, museums, retail stores, etc. I even like to look at the window treatment styles used in movies, especially those which take place in another era from our own.
It’s my own little obsession <lol> While I am consciously looking for these things, most people are not but that doesn’t mean you aren’t noticing them.

Style is what’s current or about a certain vernacular…we all are bombarded by media, printed and moving images…we get used to certain standards which are repeated over and over. When we see something outside that point of contemporary reference, it looks odd or dated. The type of window treatment style you choose can really set the tone for your rooms…for instance;

Pleated draperies are traditional and most of my younger clients say that they don’t want them because they remind them of their mothers. They say the same thing about sheer draperies although about those, they say that they will look like their grandmother’s!
I have new and updated types of pleated looks and sheers so your windows will not look like an episode of Leave It To Beaver. A simple thing like a style of pleat can change the entire perception of the piece.

The types of fabrics used and certainly colorways chosen will also have a lot to say about your style. There are trends and styles in colors as you know in fashion as well as home décor, shabby chic and transitional being two of the current favorites.

Some treatments also are definitely gender, age or geography specific. You certainly would not treat a man’s library in the same way  you’d treat a child’s room. A house in Florida would look funny with heavy tapestry draperies…a mountain lodge in Maine may not look quite right with white plantation shutters…but the definitive looks of Tuscan and French Country styles seem to have made themselves at home from north to south and from coast to coast.

Because window treatments are most often the focal point of a room, they set the tone for the space. Think carefully about the look, mood and flavor you wish the room to have. Once you decide on those three elements,  your choice will be easy and very natural.
